‘A Teuton Knight’ is one of the original paintings used in the film Finding Saint Francis . In these paintings Angela Thomas was commissioned to give the audiences a glimpse into the places most closely associated with the Franciscan story. In these watercolours she brilliantly brings to life the feeling of the Italian landscape.
A Teuton Knight – by Angela Thomas
It must be frightening to be invaded by knights on horseback looking like this when you are a poor peasant scrapping a living off the countryside. Conrad of Lutzen, upon whom this painting is based, was not just a knight, he was a tyrant who seized the city of Assisi, subjugated the lower classes into the slavery and divided the rich from the poor. Francis sided with the poor, becoming one of them, but proved that one could be free from the yoke of tyranny.
